Common questions about PlayStation Plus plans
Which one do I actually need?
If you only want to play online with friends, Essential is enough. If you want lots of games to play without buying them, choose Extra. Premium is only worth it if you want the older classic games, the movie library or the ability to try games before buying.
Is paying for a year cheaper?
Yes, considerably. Essential is $10.99 a month, which is about $132 over a year, against $79.99 if you pay for twelve months up front. The saving is similar on the other two tiers.
Do I keep the monthly games forever?
You keep them as long as you keep paying. You must claim each month's games while you are a member; if your membership lapses they stop working, but they come back if you rejoin.
Can I move up to a higher tier partway through?
Yes. Sony charges you the difference for the time left on your current membership, so you are not paying twice.

All three tiers are also sold as 3-month memberships ($27.99 Essential, $43.99 Extra, $54.99 Premium); the data format only allows monthly and annual periods, so the quarterly figures are recorded in each plan's notes instead. Note that Sony has used the name Deluxe instead of Premium in some countries; in the United States the top tier is called Premium.
