Common questions about Kindle Unlimited plans
Do I get to keep the books?
No. Kindle Unlimited is more like a library than a bookshop. You can keep a book as long as you like while you are paying, but when you stop the membership the borrowed books disappear from your device. Books you buy separately are always yours.
I already pay for Amazon Prime. Do I need this too?
Not necessarily. Prime already includes Prime Reading, a much smaller rotating selection of books and magazines at no extra cost, and one free book a month from Amazon First Reads. Kindle Unlimited is a separate $11.99 charge on top of Prime and opens up the full library of over 5 million titles.
Do I need to own a Kindle?
No. The free Kindle app works on an iPhone, iPad, Android phone or tablet, and on a computer, and your place in a book is kept in step across all of them.
Is every book on Amazon included?
No. Kindle Unlimited has a large but specific catalog, and many big-name new releases are not in it. Before subscribing it is worth searching for two or three books you actually want and checking they show the 'Read for free with Kindle Unlimited' label.

Prime Reading can be thought of as a free tier-0 option: it is included with an Amazon Prime membership at no extra charge and gives a small, rotating selection of Kindle Unlimited titles plus a free monthly pick through Amazon First Reads. It is not a purchasable Kindle Unlimited plan, so it is not listed as a plan here. Amazon.com's own subscription and help pages block automated reading (robots.txt), so the $11.99 figure and the 20-item borrowing limit were taken from About Amazon, Amazon's official corporate news site, rather than from the sign-up page itself. Price is per month plus tax and is not bundled with Amazon Prime.
