Common questions about Microsoft Copilot plans
Is Copilot Pro still available?
No. Microsoft's support page states: "Copilot Pro is no longer available for purchase; existing subscribers can continue using it until they cancel or support ends on August 1, 2026." That date has now passed. Microsoft points people to Microsoft 365 Premium instead.
Do I have to pay to use Copilot?
No. There is a free version. Microsoft describes it as limited and says it works when there is spare capacity, so at busy times it may stop working until later.
If I buy the Family plan, does everyone get the assistant?
No, and this catches people out. Everyone gets the Word and Excel programs and their own terabyte of storage, but the assistant inside those programs works only for the person who pays.
Is it cheaper to pay for a whole year?
Yes, on every plan that offers it. Paying yearly works out at about two months free — for example Personal is $9.99 a month or $99.99 for the year. Microsoft 365 Pro is the exception and is monthly only.

Checked 21 September 2026. Microsoft has folded the old Copilot Pro subscription into its Microsoft 365 consumer plans, so there is no longer a standalone paid Copilot for individuals; Copilot Pro is not listed here because it can no longer be bought and its support ended on 1 August 2026. The consumer line-up is now: free Copilot, Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, Premium and Pro. Microsoft does not publish message counts or credit numbers for any consumer tier — only words like "higher", "extensive" and "highest" — so the usage and image ordinals reflect that wording rather than measured limits, and the exact wording is kept in the ai_usage_notes field. All paid plans also include the Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook programs, which is a large part of their value beyond the assistant.
